Moving to a new country can be overwhelming, especially when you find yourself surrounded by a million people speaking a language you don't understand. I experienced this shock first hand when I arrived in Paris.

Everything seemed confusing—the transportation system, the buildings, the food, the climate, and most of all, the language. Despite my previous exposure to French through music and online resources, I was ill-prepared for the reality of conversational French. Getting lost in the metro or trying to communicate with locals became a frustrating daily struggle. I even had to visit multiple banks before finding someone who could explain account opening procedures in English—it was a nightmare!

However, amidst the challenges, a moment of encouragement stood out. My bank advisor, despite his limited English, expressed confidence that we would communicate well in French in the future. His words stuck with me and motivated me to find a language school where I could learn French properly. I was determined to progress beyond pointing at croissants and actually ordering them with words.

Finding the right language school can be difficult for foreigners, so I'll share my experiences with the schools I visited and the ones where I took my French classes. Here are some notable options:

  1. ELFE (Ecole de Langue Française)

    • Location: 15 Rue Montmartre, 75001 Paris

    • Website: ELFE Paris

ELFE is centrally located in Paris, easily accessible by public transportation. The school offers morning and evening classes, and their tuition fees vary based on the program. Although their phone services are not always reliable, visiting in person is recommended. During my time there, I had a wonderful and patient teacher, and the overall experience provided a great kickstart to my French language journey.

2. Campus Langues

  • Location: 7 Rue Duvergier, 75019 Paris

  • Website: Campus Langues

Campus Langues, situated in the 19th district of Paris, impressed me with its teaching methods. They conduct weekly tests to keep students engaged and ensure progress. I progressed really well in my A2 grammar here. Arriving late to class is not well-received here, so punctuality is important (Just a friendly warning). The tuition fees vary depending on the program, and the school offers complete levels at the end of each semester. Nearby attractions such as La Parc de la Villette and Parc des Buttes-Chaumont add to the experience.

3. France Langue

  • Location: 9 Rue de Saint-Pétersbourg, 75008 Paris

  • Website: France Langue

France Langue is one of the most affordable language schools in Paris. Although I couldn't enrol due to class availability, I've heard positive reviews about the school. They have campuses in Nice, Bordeaux, Biarritz, Lyon, and Martinique as well. Its proximity to the Seine River and Notre Dame Cathedral adds to its appeal if you like to explore.

4. Université Paris Nanterre

  • Location: 200 Av. de la Republique, 92000 Nanterre

  • Website: Université Paris Nanterre

Université Paris Nanterre, situated just outside Paris, offers language programs. It's easily accessible via the RER A train. The tuition fees are affordable, and the university provides different programs and hours based on individual needs and French proficiency levels. However, they only accept students with a minimum A2 level. The region is calm and student-friendly, making it a highly recommended option.

Other reputable language schools in Paris include:

  • Alliance Française de Paris

  • Institut Catholique de Paris

  • Sorbonne Université

  • Étoile Institute de Langue Paris

Although I didn't visit these personally, they have a good reputation, albeit with slightly higher fees.

In conclusion, my language learning journey in Paris has been nothing short of transformative. From my personal experiences at various language schools to the remarkable institutions that i have discovered along the way, one thing remains certain, Paris is an unrivaled destination for language enthusiasts. The city offers a rich array of language schools to cater to learners of all levels. Whether you're a beginner or advanced learner, Paris presents endless opportunities to master French or explore other languages. Don't hesitate—immerse yourself in the language and cultural splendor that Paris has to offer.

I invite you you to embark on your own language-learning adventure in Paris and discover the joy of mastering French or explore the world of other languages that thrive within the city's borders.

Bonne chance on your language-learning adventure in Paris. It's time to ignite your passion for languages and enrich your life in countless ways!
